Students will weave in their experience on the island and share any part of what resonated with them and be able to express it on a platform they feel comfortable with. The final piece of this year’s oral history project will be to combine their family story, personal story and tie them together with our cultural trip to Hawaii to connect with our culture on a deeper level while discovering our roots. This can take on many forms and have let our students run free with their ideas and imagination. Students are encouraged to share a part of their life whether it be a talent, skill or story that they have experienced and express it on a traditional Pacific Islander platform such as dance, food, art etc. We asked students to continue their oral history project by beginning to document their own story. Youth will experience various educational, cultural and social activities to solidify the subjects and topics we have discussed throughout the year. Students will curate their projects during the year leading up to our anticipated trip to Hawaii (see details below) this summer (pending Covid-19 restrictions). Students have been asked to document in a variety of platforms to include written, spoken, photos, collage, video, etc. Most importantly, they will understand that they are part of a much larger network of community and connection. We know that as our youth learn and document these interactions, this will draw them closer to their families and stories. The project is titled “Discover Your Roots” and we are excited for the opportunity our students have to learn more about their families and themselves.
